Lead Technician – Freedom Boat Club Fleet Operations
Location: Fleet Operations Center (with travel to individual operating locations as needed)
Reports To: Fleet Operations Manager
Position Overview:
The Lead Technician is a critical member of the Boat Club’s fleet operations team, responsible for ensuring the highest level of maintenance and repair quality across the entire fleet. This is a hands-on role that requires daily engagement with the technical team, working directly on boats while also mentoring and training other technicians to build overall skill levels within the organization. The Lead Technician will also utilize Fleetio Fleet Management Software to track and manage maintenance schedules, repairs, and fleet readiness.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical & Maintenance Duties:
• Perform and oversee routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on the fleet’s boats, ensuring they meet safety and operational standards.
• Work directly with technicians on a daily basis, providing hands-on support and guidance to improve efficiency and quality of work.
• Conduct advanced diagnostics and repairs on outboard engines, electrical systems, fuel systems, steering, and other critical boat components.
• Ensure all repairs and maintenance activities are performed efficiently and according to manufacturer and club standards.
• Assist in maintaining an organized and fully stocked fleet operations center with necessary tools and parts.
• Occasionally travel to individual operating locations to provide on-site technical support and training.
Training & Leadership:
• Act as a mentor and lead trainer for all fleet technicians, focusing on skill development and best practices.
• Conduct daily hands-on training sessions, ensuring technicians are continuously improving and learning new techniques.
• Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and high-quality workmanship within the maintenance team.
• Identify skill gaps and develop training programs to address deficiencies and strengthen the overall team.
Fleetio Utilization & Documentation:
• Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities using Fleetio Fleet Management Software.
• Ensure all technicians properly log maintenance tasks, repairs, and part usage in Fleetio.
• Monitor fleet maintenance schedules and work orders to ensure timely servicing of all boats.
• Utilize Fleetio data to track fleet reliability, identify recurring issues, and improve preventative maintenance strategies.
Quality Control & Compliance:
• Conduct post-maintenance quality checks to ensure repairs meet the club’s high standards.
• Ensure all work performed complies with safety regulations, environmental guidelines, and manufacturer specifications.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment at the Fleet Operations Center and at all remote locations.
Qualifications & Experience:
• 5+ years of hands-on experience in marine maintenance, repair, and diagnostics.
• Expertise in outboard engines (Yamaha, Mercury, etc.), electrical systems, fuel systems, and general boat maintenance.
• Previous leadership or training experience in a marine service environment preferred.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues.
• Proficiency in using fleet management software (Fleetio experience preferred, but training can be provided).
• Ability to lift heavy equipment, work in various weather conditions, and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Willingness to travel to individual operating locations as needed.
